Today the Monastery of St Antony the Great is under the spiritual leadership of His Grace Bishop Yostos, who first joined the monastic community at St Antony’s Monastery in 1981 and was consecrated a monk in 1982 and given the name Father Shenouda. He was then ordained a monk-priest in 1985; after which he was chosen to assist in the Patriarchal Secretariat in Cairo, before being appointed the Monastery’s vicar in 1987. In 1989, he was assigned to travel to the USA to assist in establishing America’s first Coptic Monastery – which bears the name of St Antony – in California. Then in 1991, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III summoned his return to Egypt in order to ordain him as bishop and abbot of the Monastery of St Antony at the Red Sea, where he was given the name Bishop Yostos. May the Lord preserve his blessed life.
